Machiya 1
Renovation of 90-year-old Machiya
Sanjo-Keihan, Kyoto, Japan | 2002

This was the first major project to be completed since the establishment of Design1st. It was designated to be torn down within 2 years, and was left to deteriorate for over 11 years uninhabited. Therefore, there was no hot water, no operable kitchen, a metal bath that was heated with firewood and water damage from previous leaks. The completed house has a wooden bath, floor heating and most modern amenities associated with today’s lifestyle, including a dishwasher.
