Renovation of Edo Period Storehouse
Muko City, Japan | 2002

This project included a complete renovation of a 160-year-old storehouse into a meeting/gallery space. The client was told it would be best to demolish the structure since there was no use renovating it. She wanted to save it as a memorial to her father, who built a study room for her in this building when she was a child. The original storehouse was deteriorating rapidly: leaky roof, deteriorating walls and only two windows for the entire structure. The new structure has many display areas and floor heating and is now used for exhibits or similar community gatherings.
